In the vicinity is the famous Spitzkoppe.

History

At the beginning of the German colonial era in Namibia sold the Herero chief Maharero Usakos as a farm to the brothers Jansen. 1903 in turn bought the Otavi Mines and Railway Company ( omeg ) on the land to build a railway station here and other farm buildings, which Usakos received a rail link to Swakopmund and Tsumeb. 1914 were discovered north of Usakos large Turmalinvorkommen. In addition, larger tin deposits were found. After the First World War, therefore, developed in Usakos under South African rule very soon a significant mining industry. Until the 1960s Usakos prospered as a typical mining town and grew up to be a local center of the region. From the 1960s, however, the mining industry lost around Usakos increasingly important, so that the village itself experienced an economic decline. Especially the continuous attachment of the road link between Windhoek and Swakopmund in 1969 marked the sinking of Usakos in the economic and infrastructural insignificance because so until then important role of the local rail link had become obsolete. Today Usakos acts mainly as a stopover for the rain through traffic between the coast and the capital Windhoek and other towns in the interior. Usakos today has primary schools, hospitals, banks, post office and police station.
