User State Migration Tool

The User State Migration Tool ( USMT ) is to transmit a command line utility from Microsoft to user files and user settings from one Windows computer to another. It is intended primarily for network administrators when a larger number of Windows computers is to migrate to a different version. It is used via script call or when, for example, the migration is performed using SCCM integrated into the touch-down process of the operating system. For the migration of individual computer, that is for home use, the Windows Easy Transfer (WET) program is provided.

USMT migrates files and settings of the Windows versions 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 migrations from 32- bit versions to 64 -bit versions are possible, but not vice versa. USMT 4.0 does not support Windows Server operating systems and will also not be Windows 2000 and Starter editions of Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 Moreover USMT 4.0 supports only the migration of Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3

Versions

USMT 3.0.1 and 2.6.2 are publicly available. USMT 3.0.2 is a limited private release on Microsoft Connect for selected customers. USMT 4.0 and the Windows Automated Installation Kit is higher ( AIK) included.
