USS Bainbridge (DD-1)

The USS Bainbridge (DD -1 ) was the first destroyer of the U.S. Navy. It was therefore lead ship of her class of destroyers, and was the second ship, the USS Bainbridge was named after Commodore William Bainbridge.

The second Bainbridge ( Destroyer No. 1.) Was keels laid on August 27, 1901 at Neafie and Levy Ship and Engine Building Co., Philadelphia, Pa. The construction was sponsored by Mrs. Bertram Greene, great-granddaughter of Commodore Bainbridge. On November 24, 1902, the ship was ordered to reserve in Norfolk, called into active service under the command of Lieutenant GW Williamsund on February 12, 1903. The Bainbridge was on December 23, 1903 by Key West, Fla., in the lake to move through the Suez Canal to the Philippines, where she put in Cavite on April 14, 1904. Between 1904 and 1917 served DD -1 in the 1st Torpedo Flotilla of the Asiatic Fleet, interrupted by two short periods in which it was placed out of service for a short time ( January 17 1907-24 April 1908 24 April, 1912 -. April 1913 ).

On 1 August 1917 she left Cavite to relocate to Port Said, Egypt. There she served from September 25, 1917 at the 2nd Squadron of the U.S. Patrol Force. The Bainbridge took over patrols and convoy backups until they moved to the United States on July 15, 1918. There she came in Charleston, on 3 August 1918 by then was used until July 3, 1919 in fleet operations along the Atlantic coast. Then it was placed in Philadelphia decommissioned and sold on 3 January 1920.
