USS Grayling (SSN-646)

The USS Grayling ( SSN -646 ) was a nuclear submarine in the service of the United States Navy and was a member of the Sturgeon class.

History

Construction

The Grayling in 1962 commissioned and laid in May 1964 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kiel. After a construction period of about three years, the boat was launched. The commissioning took place in 1969.

Collision

On 20 March 1993, the Grayling collided with a Russian submarine, the K- 407, the Delta -IV class. Both submarines were heavily damaged, but could return to their home port under its own power.

The Grayling was repaired in July 1996 and took part in a NATO exercise in the eastern Atlantic and the western Mediterranean. On 1 March 1997, the ship was assigned to the reserve fleet, on July 18, finally followed by the decommissioning. Until 1998, Grayling was canceled in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
