History

The Yarnell was born in 1960 at Bath Iron Works laid the keel and left there in late 1961 from the stack. In February 1963, the ship in the Navy was put into service.

During their test drives the Yarnell was diverted on April 10, 1963 to participate in the search for the missing submarine USS Thresher (SSN -593 ).
