USS Hornet

USS Hornet ( Hornet ) is a traditional ship name of the American Navy. Until now, the name has been assigned eight times.

  • The first USS Hornet was a sloop that was purchased in 1775 and two years later was lost to Britain.
  • The second USS Hornet was a sloop, which was put into service in 1805 and used during the American Tripolitan War.
  • The third USS Hornet was a brig, which was launched in 1805 and in 1829 sank during a storm.
  • The fifth USS Hornet was a former British paddle steamer, only in 1865 was in the service.
