USS Langley

Two ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Langley, named after the American astronomer and physicist Samuel Pierpont Langley.

  • The first USS Langley (CV -1 ) was the first aircraft carrier of the U.S. Navy, which was created from the conversion of Colliers USS Jupiter (AC -3) and in February 1942 sank after a Japanese attack.
  • The second USS Langley ( CVL -27) was a light aircraft carrier, which was put into service in 1943, actively participated in the Second World War and was discharged in 1951 at France.
