USS Panay

Three ships of the U.S. Navy have been named after the Philippine island of Panay in the name of USS Panay.

  • The first Panay was originally a Spanish gunboat, which was acquired in 1899 in the wake of the American occupation of the Philippines. She stood until 1914 in use and was sold in 1920. On it also later WWII Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was on duty.
  • The second USS Panay (PR -5) was a river gunboat, launched in 1927, and has been used in the Chinese electricity Yangtze River. She was sunk in 1937 by Japanese forces in the so-called Panay Incident.
  • The third Panay was an auxiliary vessel, which was originally under the name USS Midway (AG -41 ) was used, but was renamed in 1943 in Panay to make the name available for Midway aircraft carrier.
