USS Pintado (SSN-672)

The USS Pintado (SSN -672 ) was a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and was a member of the Sturgeon class.

History

The Pintado 1965 announced at the end of the year in order and placed on the Iceland Mare Naval Shipyard in October 1967 in Kiel. After a construction period of almost two years the boat batch ran and was put into service in 1971 with the Navy.

The first use led the Pintado 1972 and 1973 in the western Pacific, the second in 1974 also. In May of the Pintado was operating in the waters off Petropavlovsk -Kamchatsky, where there was a Soviet submarine base. During the trips collided American with a Soviet submarine of the Yankee class. The Yankee appeared immediately, while the Pintado fled submerged. On the Pintado severe damage in the bow area were the consequence that have been resolved in the next seven weeks in dry dock on the island of Guam. Subsequently, the Pintado was the first submarine that successfully launched an anti-ship missiles of the type AGM -84 Harpoon.

After the first regular overhaul followed for the Pintado again a relocation in the Pacific, which lasted from August 1977 to February 1978. During exercises with the South Korean Navy collided Pintado with a surface vessel, with slight damage to the rudder were found.

The end of 1978 was operating under the Arctic ice, the Pintado, on 10 October, she appeared at the North Pole. 1979 was followed by tours in the Indian Ocean, where the submarine was operating as part of the hostage-taking in Tehran in 1981 was followed by another year of laying in the western Pacific Ocean. In June 1982, followed by a 16-month overhaul at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. Following operations under the Arctic ice cap followed, in November 1984 dipped the Pintado along with her sister boat USS Gurnard (SSN -662 ) as the third pair of U- boats at the North Pole.

After further trips in the Pacific and a third visit to the North Pole in 1987 was followed in July 1989, an overhaul, this time in their shipyard. 1992 Pintado was moved to Pearl Harbor and visited the North Pole on August 23, the first submarine ever a fourth visit. After riding in the Atlantic in 1993 and the Pacific 1996, Pintado was put out of service in 1998 and broken up in October 1998 as part of the Ship - Submarine Recycling Program at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
