Ust-Ilimsk

Ust- Ilimsk (Russian Усть - Илимск ) is an East Siberian city of Irkutsk Oblast in Russia. It has 86 610 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) and is located on the Angara River, about 700 kilometers from the regional capital Irkutsk. Near the town is the Ust- Ilimsker reservoir.

History

A first wooden fortress ( Ostrog ) at the site of the present city was built in the 1660s. The foundation of the town Ust- Ilimsk, but was only from the mid- 1960s, as in this area a hydroelectric power plant and the Ust- Ilimsker dam on the Angara were built. 1966 Ust- Ilimsk was founded as a workers' settlement at the power plant site. This name is derived from Ust - Russian for " mouth " - and Ilim, the Yakut hydronym of flowing past the Angara tributary. Thus the city 's name means " at the mouth of the Ilim ". For the stowage of the Angara in the course of power plant construction, the old wooden fort was moved to the museum Talzy.

On December 27, 1973 Ust- Ilimsk received city rights. The construction of the hydropower plant was completed in 1980.

Economy and Transport

In addition to the Angara hydropower plant, which now belongs to energy companies Irkutskenergo include a cogeneration plant, a sawmill of Ilim Timber and other companies in the wood processing sector, a bread factory and a brewery to important establishments in the city.

Transport links with other regions exist from here, among others, a country road to Bratsk and a railway branch line. The regional airport of Ust- Ilimsk was closed in 2001 due to lack of profitability. By tram Ust- Ilimsk the city has also a wide-gauge tram operation.
