Utah Territory

The Utah Territory was an organized territory of the United States from 1850 to 1896. Was formed on September 9, 1850 from the northeastern part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ceded in 1848 by Mexico to the U.S. territory. The same day, the westernmost state of California was admitted to the Union and formed the New Mexico Territory south to. This was preceded by the Compromise of 1850.

In 1849, Mormon settlers in the Salt Lake Valley had unsuccessfully demanded in a petition to Congress, the inclusion of the provisional State of Deseret with capital in Salt Lake City to the Union. In Utah War 1857/58 of the Mormon state was shattered.

1861 was formed the new Nevada Territory out of the western part of the territory and ceded parts of the Colorado Territory and the Nebraska Territory in the east. 1868 went further areas of the State of Nevada and Wyoming Territory (see map ).

1869 was completed by the track circuit between Union Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad at Promontory, Utah, the First Transcontinental railroad.

The ongoing disputes with the Mormons were a reason for the long delay between the formation of the territory and its admission to the Union as the state of Utah ( 45th state ) on 4 January 1896.
