Utami Kinard

Utami Dewi ( born June 16, 1951 in Surabaya, also known as Nio Pik Wan known, married Utami Kinard ) is a former Indonesian badminton player. She became world champion in 1975 with the Indonesian women's team as well as 1969 and 1972 Vice World Champion. She later emigrated to the United States. Rudy Hartono is her brother.

Career

In the final of the Uber Cup 1969, the emerging Indonesian team met on Japan, but lost with 1:6. Utami Dewi defeated in this finale in the single Tomoko Takahashi with 3:11 and 8:11. 1972 fared no better Indonesian women. Once again, there was recorded a high 1:6 defeat. Dewi lost it again her single, this time against Noriko Nakayama with 2:11 and 0:11. Three years later, the Indonesians were their adversaries finally wrest the Cup and win on home soil 5-2. Dewi was defeated in single but once again Noriko Nakayama with 5:11 and 3:11.

In the individual disciplines Utami Dewi won the 1971 women's singles at the Asian Championships. At the Olympics in 1972, where badminton was played as a demonstration sport, they failed in the final again Noriko Nakayama. In Indonesia, she was repeatedly national champion in women's singles and double. 1981, after her marriage to U.S. badminton star Chris Kinard, she also won the U.S. Championships in women's singles.
