Utility pole

A phone mast is a mast which carries above-ground telephone lines. Telephone poles are usually made of wood.

Applications

In the public telephone network in Central Europe only insulated telephone cable is installed on telephone poles that contains multiple lines. Such a cable will be referred to as an aerial cable.

Phone lines with bare wires ( overhead line) are, however, no longer used in the public telephone network in Germany and many Western European countries.

The last phone lines with bare wires in the public switched telephone network are likely in the former West Germany in the second half of the 1970s, have been replaced in the new federal states against 1999 by air or underground. However, no date for closing the last telephone transmission line in the public telephone network in Germany can be determined.

Along non-electrified branch lines of the tracks are still occasionally masts of the distance telephone lines, but they are increasingly dismantled with the introduction of GSM -R. When Preßnitztalbahn the distance telephone line including the masts with the different designs was (single pole, A- mast, etc.) completely restored faithfully and used for railway operation official purposes.

Crampon

Telephone poles are mounted with the help of special crampons. These step irons have a semicircular bracket, which extends in the left to right and right crampons vice versa. In addition, a special belt is required for A climb up a telephone pole. At this girdle two lines are attached which are placed around the pole and be secured by means of snap-hook back in his belt. By this belt prevents the climber tilts backwards. Furthermore, as the climber can sit back at the top and work so easily. The safety equipment (belt) had to have only one leash with metal hook by the year 2004. These belts were abolished because of the following problem: Each of the first mast ( pole 0) and the last mast an aboveground line have a strut that comes together at the upper end of the mast with this. Thus, it is necessary to briefly take the safety line, to put them over the crossbar. It is occasionally happened that when hooking the carabiner hook that was not closed properly or is that crashed in the belt of the climbers before hooking the carabiner hook. To avoid this security belt was fitted with two safety lines. Thus, a line can be placed over the strut, while the climber is always secured. Furthermore, a mast may only be boarded when a second employee / co-worker is on site who can help in an emergency. The crampons remain namely firmly anchored in the mast, even if the climber falling backwards over.
