Utin (castle)

Utin ( in Latin letters VTIN - even " Uthine ") was the name of a Wendish fortress, which was built in the 9th century on the " Pheasant Island in" The Great Eutiner lake and was the center of the eponymous Wendish nome. The castle was connected to the shore by a bridge, on which developed a ( same ) settlement.

The castle was built 1138/39 destroyed by the Holsten in the conquest Wagriens.

The location of the settlement - the origin of the present town Eutin - on the shores of the Great Lake Eutiner was maintained and retained the name " Utin " who walked with the passage of time ( eg, via " Uthine " ) in " Eutin ".

The four letters " VTIN " were part of the coat of arms of the city Eutin.

Origin of the name

The place name " Utin " is derived from the personal name " Uta " (or " Uto " ) - supplemented by the ending- in - meaning " settlement of Uta ".
