The Rītupe ( Latvian) or Utroja (Russian Утроя ) is a river in eastern Latvia and in western Russia.

Origin is the Meiran Lake at Bērzgale northeast of Rezekne. The river flows with many windings and standing side waters to the northeast, and is several times of the railway line and the road Saint Petersburg - Warsaw crossed. At a length of about ten kilometers of the river north of Kārsava marked the border between Latvia and Russia. In Pytalovo, the river turns north and ends ten kilometers below Ostrow in the Welikaja.

The largest tributary is the Ludza (Russian Лжа, Lscha ) from the right.

River Name

In ancient times the river was Ūdrāja Name ( lett UDRs = " Otter" ). It was the Russian Folk etymology Utroja (Russian утро = " morning "). The new name Rītupe ( lett Rit = " morning " ) is in turn a back-translation into Latvian. In Latgale name Iudrupe ( "Otter River " ) has survived even the old stem.
