Utsunomiya, Tochigi

Utsunomiya (Japanese宇 都 宫 市, -shi) is a city and administrative headquarters of the Japanese Tochigi Prefecture.

The origin of the name is uncertain, but probably comes from ichi -no- miya, which indicates the highest Shinto shrine of a province, where the precursor province of Tochigi, Shimotsuke, and refers to the Futaarayama shrine in the city center.

Geography

It is located about 100 km north of Tokyo. Since Utsunomiya is increasingly becoming a place of residence for working in Tokyo daily commuters, the population is growing steadily.

Economy

In Utsunomiya, there is also a Canon optics factory, a Japan Tobacco Factory, Honda design centers, and various other industrial concerns in the Kiyohara Industrial Park. There are also near the city center of one of the largest malls in the Nordkanto region.

Utsunomiya is in Japan until today known as a manufacturer of gyoza ( meat pies ).
