Uttigen

Uttigen is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Uttigen is located on 544 m above sea level. Level, 6 km northwest of the city of Thun (air line). The village extends on both sides of Glütschbachs on the western edge of the Aare Valley, at the foot of Hubels, a southern spur of the Belpberg, on the border of the Bernese Oberland.

The area of ​​3.1 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the broad Aaresenke between Bern and Thun. The eastern border is the channelized and straightened Aare, which is flanked here by a forest belt. To the west of the municipality floor extends over the flat alluvial plain with the forest area Obere Au and agricultural areas on both sides of Glütschbachs up on the adjacent heights. On the wooded Hubel is 606 m above sea level. M. reached the highest elevation of Uttigen. To the north of the municipality spell reaches the plateau, representing the southeastern foothills of the Belpberg and was formed from glacial Aaregletscher. This plateau falls steeply to the east from Aare, which has been modeled with its erosive power the rocky mound at the undercut slope. From the municipality surface 1997 20 % came from settlements, 33 % of forest and woody plants and 44% to agriculture; slightly less than 3% was unproductive land.

To Uttigen include various individual farms. Neighboring communities of Uttigen are gravel, Heimberg, Uetendorf, Noflen, Kirchdorf (BE) and Jaberg.

History

The first documentary mention of the place was already in the year 894 under the name Utingun. Later appeared the names Utingen ( 1259 ), Uttingen ( 1295) and Utthingen (1300). The etymology of the place name is not clear. Some sources derive from the Celtic place names from ( meaning: fertile place ), others lead him back to the Old High German personal name or Uto Utto.

In the Middle Ages was located on the plateau on the western edge of the Aare valley a castle square, about whose origin little is known. The almost square space had often referred to an area of ​​about 1,400 square meters and was in the documents of the 13th and 14th century as a fortress city and Uttigen. Written assigned as owners are the nobles of Wädenswil since 1271. Already in the 13th century were the Barons of Kramburg in its place, which Uttigen made ​​it their headquarters. After the extinction of the family of the Kramburger the village underwent various changes of ownership before it came into the possession of the hospital tuna in the 15th century. From the 10th century Uttigen owned a house of worship, but the 1536 one was destroyed by fire. As a result, no new church was built, because the community could not afford to build. Therefore, the village joined the parish church village to which it belongs today.

Under Bernese rule Uttigen subordinate to the district court Seftigen. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ), the village belonged to the district during the Helvetic Seftigen and from 1803 to Oberamt Seftigen, which was given the status of an office district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831. From 1884, the Aare was corrected in the field of Uttigen and provided with flood protection embankments.

Population

With 1898 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Uttigen belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Bern. Of the 96.2% of residents speak German, 0.7% French-speaking and 0.6 % speak English (as of 2000). The population of Uttigen amounted in 1850 to 321 residents in 1900 to 407 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population increased continuously to 887 persons ( 1970). Since then, a significantly greater increase in population was associated with a doubling of the population recorded in 30 years.

Policy

The voting shares of the parties at the national elections of 2011 were: SVP 32.8 %, SP 15.9%, 15.7% BDP, GPS 9.2%, EDU 6.5%, FDP 6.0%, EPP 4.8 %, glp 3.9%, CVP 1.4%.

Economy

Uttigen was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, agriculture and dairy farming, animal husbandry and forestry have a certain role in the occupational structure of the population. Many other jobs are in the local retail industry and the services available. In Uttigen today among builders, computer science, electrical industry, metal construction, a gravel plant and machine shops are represented. In recent decades, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly around Thun, partially also in the agglomeration of Bern.

Traffic

The community is conveniently technically quite well developed. It is located on a link road from Thun to Kirchdorf ( BE). The nearest links to the motorway A6 ( Bern- Thun) is located approximately 3 km from the center. On 1 July 1859, the railway line from Bern to Thun was taken with a station in Uttigen in operation, today the trains to Bern to Thun or per half hour.

Attractions

From the former Castle Square and the ruins are only a few remnants still visible. The land is privately owned. In the old town some stately farmhouses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in the Bernese style. Landmark Uttigen is the former (old ) school house, which was built on the site of the medieval church, also of stone, which originate from the castle ruins and has a church-like bell tower with clock.

Sports

The place is known, inter alia, also for his roller hockey club, the RSC Uttigen, which won the title of Swiss Champion in the National League A in the years 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004. Furthermore, the Rollhockeyaner were already eight times in the Cup final, but all went finals mostly just lost.
