Uva Rara

Uva Rara (Eng. rare grape) is a red wine grape that is grown in the Italian regions of Lombardy and Piedmont. According to the ampelographers Victor Pulliat her name, however, does not refer to their frequency, but to the very beautiful appearance of this variety. In Italy vineyards were raised in the 1990s about 550 hectares under. Approved is the cultivation in the provinces of Novara, Vercelli, Milan and Pavia.

The late maturing variety produces pale red wines with low acidity and medium alcohol content.

In Piedmont, the variety is under the name Bonarda Novarese used in several DOC wines such Sizzano, Boca, Fara Collina Torinese or for blending. However, Bonarda Novarese is also a synonym for the red grape Bonarda Piemontese.

Uva Rara but is also a synonym for the red variety Vespolina.
