UW Imap

The UW IMAP server is the reference server implementation of the IMAP protocol. Both the Request for Comments (RFC ) 3501 and the UW IMAP submitted by Mark Crispin. Unlike other server implementations much emphasis was placed on being compatible with existing mailbox formats.

UW IMAP uses the c-client library program, which is also used when Alpine and Pine. C -client supports the following mailbox formats: mbox, MIX, mbx, MMDF tenex, mtx, mh, mx and Usenet news spool and the following Internet protocols: IMAP, POP3, NNTP, and SMTP.

On 4 August 2008, the Alpine team from the University of Washington has announced "shift our effort from direct development into more of a consultation and coordination role to help integrate Contributions from the community. " (We shift our efforts from direct development to an advisory and coordinating role to integrate the contributions from the developer community. ) Then Mark Crispin launched a new fork called Panda IMAP.
