Uwe Messerschmidt

Uwe Messerschmidt ( born January 22, 1962 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) is a former German cyclist who in 1984 won the Olympic silver medal in the points race for the Federal Republic of Germany.

Messerschmidt won the 1980 Junior World Championships in the points race. At the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, he received the silver medal in the points race behind the Belgian Roger Ilegems, the two were the only non lapped rider in the field. In 1987 he won at the World Amateur Championships also the silver medal, this time Marat Ganejew was from the USSR before him. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul Messerschmidt came in sixth.

Although Messerschmidt 1987 at road race Rund um Düren won, he was widely known as a track specialist. So he won together with Manfred Donike, the son of doping investigators Manfred Donike in numerous rail criteria. Even in the amateur class of several six-day race, the duo was successful.

From 1993 to 1997 Messerschmidt was professional, but was able to celebrate more success in the pros.
