Uwharrie National Forest

Uwharrie National Forest is an upside of the United States of America under the protection forest area in the state of North Carolina. The National Forest is predominantly within the boundaries of Montgomery County, but also extends into the County's Randolph and Davidson into it. Located in the central south of the state forest is with 203.84 square kilometers, the small of the four national forests in the area of North Carolina, which are about 79 % in Montgomery County. The forest area is managed jointly with the other three national forests of the state, the Croatan, Nantahala, and Pisgah National Forest, Asheville. The competent Ranger Station site has his office in Troy.

The name comes from the forest where the largest part of the forest is divided into the Uwharrie Mountains, the mountains. In the West, the area of the Yadkin River and the Great Pee Dee River is limited, while the northern boundary follows the farthest mountain range in the north of Uhwarrie Mountains near Asheboro. In the east, the forest ends at the county seat of Montgomery County, Troy.

The land was first purchased by the federal government in 1931, the area was then known as Uwharrie Reservation. The forest area was given the federal recognition in the early 1960s coincided with the forests Nantahala, Pisgah and Croatan by the President John F. Kennedy.

The forest is divided by a number of state and federal highways.

The first essential vein of gold in the U.S. was discovered not far from this area in 1799 and in the Uwharrie Mountains gold was discovered in the 1800s. During the Great Depression, there was a small gold rush until now the gold panning in the streams and rivers of the area is a popular recreational activity. Boating and fishing on Badin Lake possible, the Uwharrie National Recreation Trail runs through the forest. Other trails and paths are suitable for hiking, mountain biking, camper or tab. For motorized off-road vehicles there is a separate way system, which is navigable only during the season.
