Uyuni Municipality

The municipality Uyuni (also: Tola Pampa ) is a district in the Potosí Department in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location in near space

The municipality Uyuni is one of three Municipalities in the province Antonio Quijarro. It is bordered to the north by the department of Oruro, on the west by the province of Nor Lípez, to the south by the province chichas Sur, in the southeast of the province of Nor chichas, on the east by the municipality of Tomave, and in the north- east by the province Tomás Frías.

Central location of the district is the town of Uyuni with 10,551 inhabitants ( 2001 census ) in the southwestern part of the municipality.

Geography

The municipality Uyuni extends in a north-south direction over a length of 220 kilometers between the Salar de Uyuni in the west and the ridge of the Cordillera de chichas in the east. The average width of the Municipalities is 30-50 kilometers.

The climate in the great salt desert, the " Gran Pampa Salada ", is a typical diurnal climate where the temperature differences between day and night be more pronounced than between seasons. The population density of the municipality is 2.4 inhabitants / km ² ( 2001 census ), the proportion of the urban population is 56%.

The population declined from 1992 to 2001 by 4.8 percent, from 19,648 to 18,705 inhabitants.

The life expectancy of newborns is 62 years.

The literacy rate for those over 19 years is 84 percent, and that 94 percent of men and 76 percent in women.
