Uzeste

Uzeste is a commune with 429 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Gironde department in the region Aquitaine ( Aquitaine). It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes du canton de Villandraut.

Geography

The Ciron flows through the municipal area. Uzeste is situated approximately 7 kilometers west from the edge of the Regional Natural Park Landes de Gascogne ( Parc naturel régional of the Landes de Gascogne ) and is surrounded by the forest of the Landes du Pudau. 13.5 km north east of the municipality lies Langon.

History

Uzeste was founded in the 12th century by the family de Got. Bertrand de Got was in 1305 appointed to the Pope, and was called as Pope Clement V. He did increase the Collegiate Church of Uzeste.

Culture and sights

The Gothic collegiate church of Notre -Dame has yet Romanesque side walls from the 13th century. The construction of the apse was placed in the 14th century by Clement V. His grave and that of a member of the House Grailly also date from the 14th century. Nave and bell tower were rebuilt in the 16th century. The church was classified as a monument historique in 1840 ( historical monument ).

Economy

The main activities of the Uzestois (residents ) are forestry and breeding of domestic animals.

Personalities

In the church of Our Lady of Uzeste the grave of Pope Clement V is (* 1250-1265; † 1314), who moved in 1309 the papal residence from Rome to Avignon.

Bernard Lubat ( born May 12, 1945 in Uzeste ) is a jazz pianist who initiated the music festival Uzeste musical.
