Uzumaki

Uzumaki - Spiral Into Horror (Japaneseうずまき, Uzumaki, dt " spirals ") is a manga series by Junji Ito, published in Japan from 1998 to 1999. It was filmed in 2000 under the title Uzumaki and is classified in the genres of horror and mystery.

Content

In the small town Kurouzu repeatedly occur supernatural phenomena associated with spirals. These are first noticed only by Shuichi Saito, whose father is often part of the phenomena. Shuichi's girlfriend Kirie Goshima first noticed nothing unusual and worries about Shuichi's health. But the events become more frequent and more drastic. Over time, the inhabitants are obsessed with spirals or paranoid, it comes to cruel deaths and soon the people turn to other spiral beings.

Publication

The manga series was released in separate chapters in the magazine Weekly Big Comic Spirits von 1998 to 1999., The publisher Shogakukan brought the series out in three anthologies.

In Viz Comics published an English translation after the series had already appeared in the magazine Pulp. At Planeta DeAgostini Comics, a Spanish edition came out in Tonkam a French and a Portuguese in Brazil at Conrad. Carlsen Comics published the series since October 2013 in a German version. Since March 2014, the third book is available in German language.

Reception

The English edition was in 2002 and 2003 nominated material for the Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International category. According to the magazine Animerica succeeds Junji Ito, to make such an everyday and natural patterns such as spirals somewhat terrifying. So he creates an unusual, timeless horror story that is also fun to read and can sympathize in the also occurring romantic scenes with the main characters. Deep-seated fears, obsession and desire are the themes of the series.
