Uzun Hassan

Uzun Hasan ( اوزون حسن; German: Langer Hasan; * 1423 in Diyarbakir, † January 6, 1478 in Tabriz ) was a ruler of the Turkmen Aq Qoyunlu. He ruled over parts of western Iran, Iraq and Anatolia. His reign lasted from 1453 to 1478.

His grandfather Qara Yülük Uthman Bey, a son of Princess Maria of Trebizond, was used by Timur as an administrator in Diyarbakir. From there he controlled the cities of Erzincan, Mardin, Urfa and Sivas. 1467 Hasan defeated the ruler of the Turkmen Qara Qoyunlu Shah Jahan.

The eldest son Uzun Hasan's name was Oghurlu Mohammed and was the son of a slave ( umm walad ). Khahil Mirza Yakub Bey, Yusuf Bey Bey and possibly Masih were the sons of his Seljuk chief wife ( mahd -i ʿ Ulyā ) S'h'āh Begum. The mother of his son Zeynel is unknown.

1458 Hasan married Theodora Megale Comnena, the illegitimate daughter of the ruler of the Empire of Trebizond John IV Comnenus. She was also known under the name of " Despina Hatun " and lived far away in Harput. Despina was not his first wife. She remained a Christian and was buried in a church in Diyarbakir. With her ​​Uzun Hasan had three daughters and a son named Jacob. This was allegedly strangled to death after the death of Hasan by his brothers. One of the daughters, Martha, also called Halime, married Sheikh Haydar of Ardabil and so was the mother of Shah Ismail I.. Another daughter named Alamschah Begum was married to Sheikh Haydar son Ali Mirza. Uzun Hasan's first wife S'h'āh Begum took an active role in the affairs of government.

Uzun Hasan had good contacts to the Empire of Trebizond. When the Ottomans wanted to annex the empire, he stood on the side of the emperor. However, this support did not help, so that the Ottomans took Trebizond on 26 September 1461. Uzun Hasan defeated the Ottomans themselves once in 1471 in Erzincan and again on August 11, 1473 at the Battle of Otlukbeli.

His eldest son Mohammed Bey Oghurlu rebelled against his father. He later escaped to the Ottoman Sultan, but was killed at the behest of Uzun Hasan.

After a train against Georgia Uzun Hasan fell ill and died in 1478 in the capital, Tabriz. Hasan was succeeded by his son Yakup Bey. About 30 years after his death, his empire was by his grandson Shah Ismail, ruler of the Safavid eliminated.

The Venetian diplomat Ambrogio Contarini told of a trip he took in 1474 to Persia, Uzun Hasan. He should bring on behalf of Venice with the Aq Qoyunlu an alliance against the Ottomans about. Uzun Hasan received him in October 1474 in Isfahan friendly, but there was no alliance on both sides.
