V. V. Giri

VV Giri ( Venkata Giri Varahagiri; born August 10, 1894 in Brahmapur, † June 24, 1980 in Madras, Tamil Nadu ) was an Indian state president of 1969 until 1974.

Giri studied law in Ireland and became a member of the Irish independence movement Sinn Féin. 1916 after the Easter Rising, he was deported to India. There he worked in the trade union movement and for the independence of India. After the independence of India from 1947 to 1951 he was High Commissioner in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) and later governor of Uttar Pradesh ( 1957-1960 ), Kerala ( 1960 to 1965 ) and Mysore ( 1965-1967 ). In 1967 he was elected Vice-President of India. 1969 after the death of Zakir Hussain, he was elected to the office of Indian President.
