Václav Bernard Ambrosi

Wenzel Bernard Ambrose ( born July 2, 1723 in Kutna Hora, † April 26, 1806 ) was a Bohemian painter of historical scenes.

Life

Wenzel Bernard Ambrose studied at the Academy in Prague painting with his brother Joseph, a miniature painter, and then at the local canons Sierdus. During this time he became involved with the Jesuits and was planning to join the Order, but instead devoted himself to painting. So he collected paintings and appropriated knowledge. He also worked as a restorer, for which he was praised in his time. Overall, he showed himself to be so talented that he was appointed court painter to the Empress Maria Theresa. In addition, he was active as head of the Prague painters' guild and was also their last. The Emperor Joseph II estimated Ambrose as an artist and very often sought his advice.

Ambrose died 82 years old and had a son, Anton Ambrose. This aspired to a career as an artist, but died 20 years old.

Work

Ambrose painted the fresco Six of the oldest Czech dukes and altarpieces for churches Bohemian. In addition, and in addition to three ceiling paintings he painted more historical or biblical representations.

Constant of Wurzbach ordered Ambrose to the Venetianismus and described the works as Ambrozys painted with bright, vivid colors. In Conversationslexicon of Fine Arts is said that he could paint well on both lime and oil.
