Vacone

Vacone is a municipality with 263 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Vacone is located 70 km north of Rome, 34 km west of Rieti, and 27 km south of Terni. It is located in the Sabine mountains on the border between Umbria and is a member of the Comunità Montana Sabina.

The municipality covers an altitude difference of 250-1080 meters above sea level.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Calvi dell 'Umbria (TR ), Configni, Cottanello, Montasola and Torri in Sabina.

Traffic

Vacone situated on the state road SS 313, which connects the Via Flaminia near Terni with the Via Salaria at Passo Corese.

The nearest motorway exit is Ponzano Romano, 20 km off the A1 Autostrada del Sole.

The nearest train station is in Stimigliano at the regional railway line FR1, 17 km.

History

The name is derived possibly Vacone ago by the Sabine goddess Vacuna. Archaeological finds prove the settlement of the township already in antiquity. The medieval castle was first mentioned in 1027.
