Vadim Milov

Vadim Milov (Russian Вадим Милов; born August 1, 1972 in Ufa, Soviet Union ) is a Swiss chess grandmaster.

Until 1992 Milov played for the Soviet Union and Russia, without achieving great success. That changed the following year when he was selecting players for Israel and International Master. In 1993 he became Grand Master and played for Israel at the Chess Olympiad in Moscow, and later for Switzerland in Istanbul ( 2000). In total he scored at Chess Olympiads 12 ½ points in 21 games.

Three times he has played in the knockout system for the FIDE World Chess Championship:

  • Groningen, 1997 - in the third round he defeated Kiril Georgiev,
  • Las Vegas, 1999 - in the first round, he dropped out after defeats against Bartholomew Macieja
  • Moscow, 2001 - again in the third round he defeated Peter Svidler.

In many international tournaments Milov was the winner or shared the first place: Bratton (2001 ), Moscow (2002, Aeroflot Open), Benasque (2002), Ashdod (2003), Lausanne (2003), Genoa (2003), Santo Domingo ( 2003), Merida, Mexico ( 2003, 2005 and 2006 ), Geneva ( 2004), Seville (2004 ), San Marino ( 2006), Philadelphia ( 2006 World Open ) and Morelia ( 2007).

Milov was in rapid chess in the Corsica Masters in Bastia 2005 very successfully. He won against Arkady Naiditsch, Judit Polgár and Zoltán Almási. In the final he defeated Viswanathan Anand.

His current Elo rating is 2644 He is number one in the Swiss rankings and No. 98 in the world rankings (as of March 2010).. His previous highest Elo rating of 2705 reached Milov in July 2008.
