VÃ¥gan Church

The Vågan kirke ( German: Vågan church ) is a religious building in Kabelvåg on the belonging to Norway Lofoten.

The church was built in 1898 in neo-Gothic style in place of an earlier building dating from 1798. Due to their size with space for 1,200 worshipers it is also called Lofotkatedralen. It is the largest wooden church north of Trondheim. The architect was Carl Julius Bergstrøm. The building was built of the wood construction firm Jacob Digre from Trondheim. The components were prefabricated and assembled there in Kabelvåg.

The altar of the church was created by the priest and painter Nikolai Fredrik in the period 1869-1870. The altar is from the old church and shows Getsemanemotive. The middle and largest picture shows Jesus and an angel.

The church has a Friedrich II Bible from 1589 Next there are two baptismal font.; the new font is used for baptisms, the basin of the old church is a patera.

Comes a picture of Just Giblsen, the last Catholic priest from 1534. With the Reformation in 1536 he converted to Evangelical - Lutheran faith. The most famous priest from Vågan was the " Greenland Apostles" Hans Poulsen Egede.
