Vai lung thlan

Vai ment thlan ( Mizo: lung "stone", thlān " grave "; vai means " foreign" or represents vai Phei, the name of an old Kuki clan ) is a mancala variant, the J first in 1912 by Lt.- Colonel. Shakespear was described in the book The Lushei Kuki clan. The game is (formerly Lushai ) of women and men of the Mizo played that live in the Indian state of Mizoram, extending between Myanmar and Bangladesh in the extreme east of the subcontinent. Mizoram was annexed in the early 1890s by the British and was one after the Indian independence, in the state of Assam. 1972 Mizoram became a Union territory and on 20 February 1987, after the signing of a peace agreement between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front in 1986, a separate state.

The unusual origin of the game may be the reason why it is totally different from other Indian Mancala variants. It rather resembles Toguz Korgool, the National Game of the Kyrgyz and Kazakhs.

The Mizo are known for their rich material culture, there is still the board only from shallow wells dug in the ground. This should not obscure the fact that Vai ment is thlan a challenging game.

Game rules

The board consists of two times six wells in which there are five stones at the beginning of the game. Each player controls a trough series.

In each train a player distributes the contents of his holes clockwise individually on the following holes.

If the last stone falls into an empty hole, he begins this stone and all stones behind in an unbroken chain (in other words, counter-clockwise) have come into an empty hole. It does not matter whether these stones are on your own or the opponent's side.

The defeated stones are removed from the board.

It is not permitted to waive the train, unless you can not play. The game ends when both players can not move because there are no more stones are on the board.

The winner, who has caught the most rocks. If each player hits 30 stones, the game is a draw.

Strategy

The games start off slow, but accelerate when the board empties and the stones to concentrate on a few wells. On average a game lasts about 70 trains.

A trough containing 12 stones, can catch a stone's always wenigenstens since the last stone is distributed into the empty bowl.

Wells containing more than 12 blocks can never catch rocks. They provide a good defense is because each well after their content is distributed, at least contains a stone.

At the end of the game, the players try depriving the enemy of the last trains and keep as many stones as on their own side that only single stones are formed when the content of wells is distributed. An overflowing well is therefore in the final a disadvantage.
