Vaiaku

Vaiaku is one of the nine villages of the island Fongafales, the largest island of Funafuti Atoll. In Vaiaku are the building of the Government of Tuvalu. That is why the village by some German especially sources is also referred to as the capital of the island state. However, the capital is the Funafuti as a whole.

Vaiaku has 516 inhabitants ( 2002 census ); for comparison, the total population is Fogafales 4492 inhabitants ( 2002 census ). The only attraction is the 14 km wide and 18 km long lagoon, where the village is located. In Vaiaku adjacent to the government office, the only bank, the post office and the building of the telecommunications company of Tuvalu.
