Väike Lähtru ( German Post - Lechtigall ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the rural community Martna ( Martna vald ) in Lääne in Estonia.

Population and location

The village has 34 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is located 21 kilometers south-east of the district capital of Haapsalu. Through the village the river Rannamõisa ( Rannamõisa Jõgi ), which empties into the Bay of Matsalu flows.

Good

Since 1688 in addition to the nearby estate of Suure- Lähtru (wholesale Lechtigall ) is proved and the court Väike Lähtru (small Lechtigall ). By no later than 1765 no longer fell both ownership together. From then on until 1865 Väike Lähtru was owned by the noble Baltic German family Ungern- Sternberg. Last private owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was the family of Hunnius.

Orthodox school and church

1882, at the time of Russifizierungsversuche the tsarist authorities in Estonia, a Russian Orthodox village school was talu in the yard Panga founded. A short time later, the school moved into a new building.

From 1902 to 1906, the later opera singer Alexander Arder visited ( 1894-1966 ) where the primary school. In 1970 the school was closed. At the educational institution recalls a 1998 specified memorial stone.

1885 was called to crossings of the Lutheran Estonians to Eastern Orthodox also an Orthodox church in Väike Lähtru to life. From 1887 to 1889 alongside the new school building, the Orthodox Nativity of the Mother of God - Church ( Jumalaema Sündimise Nicholas' Church ) was built. It was consecrated in October 1889. Architects of the church were E. Bernhardt and K. Nyman.

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1974 the church was closed. Of the original four church bells located in a museum in Haapsalu. The other three hung until 2007 in the concert and opera house in Tallinn Estonia.

The bells were returned after regaining of Estonian independence of the Orthodox Church. You are now in the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church ( EAÕK ) cathedral in the capital of Estonia.

Next to the church is the cemetery of the village.
