Vainikkala

Vainikkala [ ˌ ʋɑi̯nik kɑlɑ ] is a village in south-eastern Finland with about 400 inhabitants. It belongs to the town of Lappeenranta, the center of which lies about 29 km north.

Vainikkala lies directly on the border with Russia, which is why there is also a large and important station here. Trains to Russia stop here so that border and customs control can be performed. In 2007, nearly 400,000 people crossed the border at Vainikkala.

The train from St. Petersburg to Helsinki holds several times a day in Vainikkala. The freight terminal makes Vainikkala an important transit point for trade between Russia and the EU.
