Vaiņode

Vainode ( German: Wainoden ) is a town in the southwest of Latvia, on the border with Lithuania. It is the center of the district ( Vainodes Novads ).

History

The town originated as a railway station on the 1871 -built route Liepaja - Mažeikiai was established.

During the First World War was from 1916 north of the village of airship port Wainoden the German Imperial Navy, the hangars were later reused as market halls in Riga.

In the 1930s Vainode was a popular spa town, where there were several sanatoria. North of the village is the Good Bata.

The Red Army operational by 1945, the largest military airfield in the Baltics. Today these systems are falling apart.

Vainodes novads

Since 2009, the municipalities Vainode and Embūte form an administrative community together with 2932 inhabitants (as of 1 July 2010).
