Vaite

Vaite is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Vaite situated at an altitude of 205 m above sea level, 18 km north-east of Gray and about 46 km north- northwest of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the west of the department, on the western edge of the valley of the Vannon, opposite Membrey, north of Saônetals.

The area of ​​9.39 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Saône Valley. Vaite has only a small share of the valley of the Vannon. The river forms a short section on the eastern border. It flows with several turns by about one kilometer wide flood plain south to the Saône. To the west, the municipality's area extends over an approximately 20 m high steep slope on the adjacent plateau, which is subdivided by several dry valleys. The plateau consists of an alternation of calcareous and sandy- marly sediments of the upper Jurassic period. Both in the valley of Vannon and on the plateau, which is on average 235 meters, dominates agricultural use. On the west, the area extends into the grove of the Forêt de Dampierre. The southern boundary is the hill the Haut- Bois, in the 264 m, the highest point reached by Vaite. It coincides with a steep slope from the Saône.

Neighboring communities of Vaite are Roche- et- Raucourt and Brotte -lès- Ray in the north, Membrey in the east, and Savoyeux Autet in the south and Dampierre- sur-Salon in the West.

History

The territory of Vaite was settled very early, since the Roman road from Besancon to Langres was. Is mentioned in a document Vaite in the 13th century. The name changed with the passage of time from Vayttes about Vaitte the present name. In the Middle Ages Vaite belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local government had since 1320 held the Lords of Ray, where Vaite formed a private fiefdom. The village was looted and burned in 1569 by troops of the Duke of Zweibrücken. The former seat of power was destroyed, probably before 1626. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Vaite is a member of the 42 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes des Quatre Rivières.

Attractions

The Chapel of Saint- Guérin was built in 1747. Ecclesiastical Vaite belongs to the parish Membrey. From 1848 comes the Lavoir, which once served as a laundry and watering cattle. Its roof is supported by numerous columns. The Mairie ( Municipal House ) was built in 1899.

Population

With 214 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) is Vaite to the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly during the first half of the 20th century (1896 342 persons were still counted ), only relatively small variations were recorded in the last decades.

Economy and infrastructure

Vaite has long been a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. In addition, had a brickyard and the mining of iron ore of importance.
