Vakhtang III of Georgia

Vakhtang III. (* 1276, † 1308) from the Bagratides dynasty was ruler of medieval Georgia ( 1298-1308 ).

After the youngest brother of David VIII and Wachtangs III. , Giorgi, had reigned for a few months in Tbilisi, put the Mongols Vakhtang III. as a king. Numismatic evidence finds that Vakhtang was 1298-1308 King in Tbilisi. According to ancient sources, he reigned from 1301 to 1307. Since he in 1297 at the court of the Il- Khans was when David VIII was discontinued, it is assumed that Vakhtang was already used in 1297 as king. In gratitude, he had to participate with strong contingents of troops in the campaigns Ghazan in Syria (1301-1303) and Oldschaitus in Gilan ( 1307 ). 1303 marched Mongolian- Georgian troops with Vakhtang at the top in Jerusalem. Vakhtang but could not prevail throughout eastern Georgia itself. Only in Somcheti, shame Wilde and temporarily in Tbilisi, he was recognized as king. As Vakhtang died in 1308, not one of his sons ( Giorgi or Demetre ) was used as a king, but the Mongols tried to reach an agreement, according to which his son Giorgi would be king, which was done in 1310 with David VIII.
