Val Medel at Platta

The Val Medel ( [ ˌ valmedəl ]? / I ) is a right tributary of the Surselva in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It extends about 15 km from Disentis / Muster ( 1,100 m above sea level. M. ) in a southerly direction to the Lai da Sontga Mary on Lukmanierpass ( 1,906 m). Through the valley, the road leads to Lukmanierpass and on into the Ticino.

In the lowest three kilometers, the valley forms a narrow gorge, the " Medelserschlucht " or " Las Ruinas " which widens the village Curaglia to green and fertile glacial valley.

Settlements

The only town in the valley is Medel ( Lucmagn ), which includes numerous villages, hamlets and isolated settlements on both sides of the valley. The largest and northernmost village is Curaglia. Other settlements are (from north to south) Mutschnengia, Platta, Parde, Fuorns and Acla. The whole area extends more than 136 km ², of which 90 km ² unproductive area.

Language and religion

In the Val Medel Sursilvan is spoken, namely a mixture of the idioms of Disentis and Sedrun in the spoken Tuatschin. The vast majority of the population is Catholic.

Waters

The most important river in the valley is the Rein da Medel. In the upper Talbabschnitt below the dam Lai da Sontga Maria he is called Froda. After the union with the Rein da Cristal Lina, drains the Val Cristallina the hamlet Pardatsch ( 1559 m ), he is called as pure Medel. Along the way he takes numerous other streams on both sides of the valley of her. In the lowest part of the valley of the river passes through the Medelserschlucht Las Ruinas and then flows south of Disentis in the Anterior Rhine. In the Rein da Medel open from both sides of the valley numerous streams.

On the massif around Piz Medel is the extensive glacier field of Medelsergletschers.

Side valleys

In Curaglia flows from the southeast Val Plattas in the Val Medel, near the hamlet of Pardatsch also from the southeast Val Cristallina.

Located in the canton of Ticino source valleys of the Rein da Medel, the Val and Val Cadlimo appointments are not counted in the Val Medel.
