Valdemar IV, Duke of Schleswig

Waldemar IV of Schleswig ( * 1265 in Gottorp Castle, Schleswig; † 26 March or July 7, 1312 in Schleswig ) was 1283-1312 Duke of Schleswig. His parents were Duke Eric I Abelsen of Schleswig (1242-1272) and Margaret of Rügen ( † 1272 ), daughter of Prince Jaromar II of Rügen.

Life

Because he was underage when his parents' death in 1272, he was under the guardianship of his liege lord, the King Eric V. " clipping " of Denmark, as a ward. It was not until 1283 he was the Valdemar IV as his father, the Duchy of Schleswig as a fief. In 1284 he gave Flensburg city rights.

No sooner in possession of his fief Valdemar IV tried with the cancellation of the throne waiver of his uncle Duke Waldemar III. , During his captivity with the Archbishop of Cologne 1251-52 had issued must enforce its claims against the Danish crown court this, but came in 1285 after process loss and coupled thereto loss of areas, including the islands ( Langeland and Alsen ), and of sovereignty and after an unsuccessful military enforcement of his plans in Danish captivity. 1287 married the daughter of Valdemar IV Duke John I of Saxe- Lauenburg, Elisabeth of Saxe- Lauenburg, and in 1306 his second wife Anastasia von Schwerin, the daughter of Count Nicholas V. They married after Valdemar's death in 1312 the Count Gerhard IV Holstein (* 1276, Count of 1312-1323 ). From Valdemar IV first marriage showed his only son, the Duke Erich II (* 1290, † March 12, 1325 ) succeeded his father in 1312 at the Schleswig throne. Duke Valdemar is buried in the cathedral at Schleswig.
