Valdemar of Denmark (bishop)

Waldemar (* 1157 or 1158; † April 1235 or 1236 probably in Loccum monastery) was Prince of Denmark, 1182-1208 Bishop of Schleswig and also from 1192/1207 bis 1209/10, 1211 / 12-1217 archbishop archbishopric of Bremen Hamburg.

Biography

Waldemar's father, the Danish King Canute V., was murdered by co-regent Sven on August 9, 1157. Waldemar was so similar to his half-brother, the Holy Niels Aarhus, hereditary claims to the Danish throne.

After completing his studies in Paris, he was 1178/82 Bishop of Schleswig ( 1187/88 ordained ). On May 23, 1191, donated by him Cistercian monastery Guldholm was inaugurated.

In 1192 he was elected ( counter-) Archbishop of the diocese of Bremen. He won in the pen War, large areas of Dithmar for the diocese. In 1193 he was, however, due to its independent political and military actions of King Canute VI. imprisoned. Despite numerous legal steps of the Roman Curia he remained imprisoned until 1206.

In 1207 he was again by the Hohenstaufen party archbishop of Bremen. A minority of the Bremen cathedral chapter under Burchard von Hausen Stump refused the choice and went to Hamburg. In Hamburg Burchard was chosen by Stump houses of the minority of the Bremen Dompkapitels and the Hamburg cathedral chapter under the influence of the Danish king Valdemar II, had occupied with Hamburg since 1202 which Nordalbingien, the anti-bishop. Pope Innocent III. eventually denied him in 1207 to confirm the choice for Hamburg -Bremen and put him from 1208 in Schleswig.

From 1207 to 1217 lasted " Waldemar 's troubles". He argued with the city of Bremen and the farmers and Stedinger was 1217/18 finally driven out. He also argued with to the Danish throne and called himself King of Denmark. He later became a monk in Loccum and from 1220 in Citeaux, where he died in 1236. He was buried on 28 April in the Cistercian abbey Loccum.
