Valencia (Negros Oriental)

Valencia ( Luzurriaga ) is a Philippine municipality in the province of Negros Oriental. It has 27,586 inhabitants ( census May 1, 2010 ).

Valencia is 9 km west of Dumaguete City, the largest city and the capital of the province.

Geography

The municipality of Valencia has an area of ​​approximately 150 km. Valencia is located 9 km west of the provincial capital Dumaguete City. 65 % of the municipality are classified as mountainous, with the heights ranging from 200 m to 500 m above sea level. The average temperature is relatively low, especially in the higher elevations of the Cuernos de Negros volcano mountain. Parts of the Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park situated on the territory of the municipality.

History

Original name Valencia was Ermita, which translates as " a secluded place " means. Ermita served as a refuge from marauding Muslim pirates. In 1856 the place in honor of the parish priest Mathias Villamayor, a native of Valencia in Spain, renamed by the Spanish colonial authorities in Nueva Valencia.

1920 was the place to Don Carlos Luzuriaga, delegate to the Philippine Legislature, renamed Luzuriaga. This was the church superiors promised to work for the development of the town, this promise has not been fulfilled to satisfaction, which is why in 1941 the old name of Nueva Valencia reintroduced.
