Valencian people

The Valencian people are an ethnic group or nationality whose homeland is the Valencian region. They speak Catalan or Spanish.

History

The history of today's Valencian began in 1237, when the king of Aragon James I occupied the Moorish Taifa kingdom of Valencia. The residents of the new empire were mainly Arabs. The Kingdom of Aragon began with the settlement of Christians. These consisted mainly of Catalans. But in the inner part of Valencia was also a high proportion of Aragonese origin, so that was spoken there specifically Spanish. On the coast, where most of the new population were Catalans, Catalan was spoken.

Until the 16th century the Valencian people were a minority, which reigned in the kingdom. The cohabitation between the Catholics and the Muslims was very good. But there were also some chapters of religious intolerance, such as the forced storage Fung of Muslims during the first uprising of the brotherhoods. Despite the total dominance of the Valencian people, condemned the Christian elites King Phillipps, the plans for the expulsion of the Moors in 1609, because the sudden absence of traditional labor, would ruin the kingdom.
