Valentin de Boulogne

Valentin de Boulogne ( born January 3, 1591 in Coulommiers, Seine- et- Marne, † August 19, 1632 in Rome, Jean de Boullongne or Moise Valentin) was a French painter.

Life

Boulogne was born in Coulommiers and came around in 1617 to Rome, where he remained until his death. Style and choice of subject of his works reveal the influence of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. It shall Nicolas Régnier as the main representative of Caravaggio - style in succession by Bartolomeo Manfredi. Best known are de Boulogne's tavern scenes, his soldiers, musicians and fortune tellers. In 1629 he was awarded it to be allowed to paint " The Martyrdom of Saint Processus and Martinian " in St. Peter's Basilica.
