Valerios Stais

Valerio Stais (Greek Βαλέριος Στάης; * 1857 Kythira, † 1923 in Athens ) was a Greek archaeologist.

Stais studied medicine and later archeology. In 1887 he became director of the Athens National Archaeological Museum. In this office he made numerous excavations in the attic, at Epidaurus, Aegina and other venues. Example, he was the first excavator of the temple of Apollo on Aegina. Among his most important discoveries include the Antikythera mechanism.

Stais was a corresponding member of the Austrian Archaeological Institute (since 1908) and an honorary member of the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies and the Society of Antiquaries of London (since 1919).
