Valery Voronin

Valery Ivanovich Voronin (Russian Валерий Иванович Воронин; born July 17, 1939 in Moscow, † May 19, 1984 ) was a Soviet football player. He was a versatile midfielder who could also be used as a central defender.

Voronin played from 1958 to 1969 for Torpedo Moscow. With this team he won the 1960 and 1965 Soviet championship and was twice Cup winners of the Soviet Union. 1964 and 1965 he was a Soviet Footballer of the Year.

Between 1960 and 1968 he came to 66 missions in the Soviet national team and scored five goals here. In 1962 he took part in the World Cup in Chile, at the European Championship finals in 1964 he was with the Soviet team in the finals to eventual winners Spanien.1966 at the World Cup in England he reached with the Soviet team to fourth place.

In the summer of 1969, Voronin suffered a car accident and was seriously injured. Although he was able to recover physically relatively quickly, but never found back to his old form. He had to end his career and got addicted to alcohol. In 1984, he was found murdered, the case was never solved. Voronin was buried at Moscow's Danilov cemetery.
