Valikamam

Valikamam (Tamil: வலிகாமம் Valikamam [ ʋaliɡa mʌm ː ] ) is a region in the Jaffna Peninsula in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.

The Valikamam region occupies the western part of Jaffna peninsula. In the east it is separated by the Uppu Aru Lagoon - of the region Thenmarachchi and the Vadamarachchi lagoon of the region Vadamarachchi. In the West, a group of islands is upstream. Administratively Valikamam part of the Jaffna district comprises the Divisions Jaffna, Nallur, Valikamam East, Valikamam North, South Valikamam, Valikamam South -West and West Valikamam.

The city of Jaffna, the main town of the peninsula, belongs to Valikamam region. Even otherwise Valikamam is densely populated: At 333 square kilometers, approximately 373,000 people ( as of 2012). Thus, two -thirds of the total population of the Jaffna peninsula are concentrated in Valikamam to only one third of the area.
