Valle Spluga

The Val San Giacomo (also Spluga Valley or in the local alpine Lombard dialect val di Giüst, German St. Jakobstal ) is an alpine valley and part of the province of Sondrio and the Lombardia region of Italy.

Geography

It stretches for about 25 km from the Splügenpass to Chiavenna. The Valchiavenna Chiavenna to Lake Mezzola north of Lake Como, is its sequel. The neighboring valleys are Misox and to the east of the Val di Lei in the West.

The valley consists of the three municipalities of San Giacomo Filippo, Madesimo Madesimo and.

It was formed by a glacier and is drained by the river Liro, which opens into the Mera to Chiavenna. Topographical separates the valley of the Western and Eastern Alps with the Lepontine Alps in the west and the Rhaetian Alps in the east.

History

The valley forms the southern ramp of the Splügenpass, who was known in Roman times and ViaSpluga can now be done through the Cardinello Gorge as a historical culture and long distance hiking. It was as a port responsible for the movement of goods on the south ramp.

From 1512 to 1797 the valley was as part of the county Cleven to the three frets. It was in 1797 part of the Cisalpine Republic and shared the fate of Lombardy.

The pass road was built in 1822 by the ruling Austrians in Milan and was until the construction of the Gotthard and San Bernardino tunnel, an important north -south connection.
