Valley County (Nebraska)

Valley County is a county located in the state of Nebraska in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ord, which was named after General Edward Otho Cresap Ord.

Geography

The County is located just east of the geographic center of Nebraska and has an area of 1478 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Greeley County, Sherman County, Custer County and Garfield County.

History

Valley County was formed in 1871. It was named after the geological conditions of the area.

According to the census of 2000, there were 4,647 people in Valley County. Of these, 85 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 1,965 households and 1,298 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.2 percent white, 0.2 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian, 0.1 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.8 percent from other races groups; 0.4 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.6 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,965 households out of which 28.0 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 5.1 percent were single mothers, 33.9 percent were non-families, 31.0 percent of all households and 17.9 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.93.

Based on the county the population was spread from 24.7 percent population under 18 years, 4.8 percent between 18 and 24 years, 22.6 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 years and 24.0 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 27,926, and the median income for a family was $ 35,571. Males have a median income of $ 25,224, women $ 17,217. The per capita income was $ 14,996. 10.1 percent of families and 12.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 16.3 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 12.7 percent of those 65 years.
