Vallisneria americana is a species of the family of the frog bite plants ( Hydrocharitaceae ).

Description

The leaves measure 10 to 110 × 0.3 to 1.5 centimeters. The leaf blade is divided longitudinally into three zones and its edge is cut entirely or. The shaft of the male flowers is 30 to 50 millimeters long and submerged. The flowers are 1 to 1.5 mm wide. Stamens are 2 available. The stamens are united at the base. The shaft of female flowers is extended so that the flowers reach the water surface. The flowers are usually solitary, rarely arranged in umbel-like clusters.

The chromosome number is 2n = 20

The flowering period extends from summer to autumn.

Occurrence

Vallisneria americana grows in fresh and brackish water in rivers, lakes and bays at altitudes from 0 to 500 meters. The species occurs in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Central America and Asia.

System

Vallisneria americana was first described in 1803 by Michaux. A synonym is Vallisneria neotropicalis Victorin.
