Valongo is a municipality and city in the Portuguese region of Norte.

History

Finds indicate a prehistoric settlement only on the higher, defensible points. In particular, the excavations in the Serra de Santa Justa following may be mentioned. Later, the residents have settled in low-lying areas to operate in the water- rich plains agriculture. With the arrival of the Romans here are more important activities to occupy. So here large quantities of gold have been mined in mines.

The present town was probably only in the course of the Reconquista. Today the district belonged in 1258 to the two administrative regions Aguiar de Sousa (municipalities Campo and Sobrado ) and Maia (municipalities of São Vicente da Queimadela, Valongo and São Lourenço de Asmes ). Water mills in the rivers and fertile soil made for a lively agricultural activity and a regionally well-known baking tradition.

Valonge witnessed heavy destruction by French troops during the Napoleonic invasions in the early 19th century and by the disputes over the Ponte Ferreira during Miguelistenkrieges between liberals and absolutists.

In the course of administrative reform by the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the civil war from 1832 to 1834 the church was raised in 1836 to Valongo headquarters of an independent circuit, and in 1837 to the small town ( Vila ). Until the 20th century, then stopped at a development of trade and industry, which was favored by the arrival of the railroad and brought further significant population growth with it. Only the municipalities of Campo and Sobrado remained predominantly agricultural. 1990 Valongo became a town ( Cidade ).
